New York, New York

Yup – last post from New York City, this time with model Anna. After Joe McNally Advanced Workshops we stayed in NYC for weekend, so it would be a waste not to shoot a human being:)

Our hotel was in financial district, so we decided to do location scouting there, and find some interesting locations. I knew that I wanted to capture glamour and commercial look of our model Anna and NYC.

When we saw that golden revolving doors with “broadway” sign, we knew that would be our first location. Even better – they were closed, so we didn’t have to watch for people walking thru them:)There was only one but: sunlight… I was hoping for building shadow, but it was too early for sun to hide behind the buildings. In this case I had no other choice than go E-TTL.

For this pictures we used umbrella and Lastolite reflector to better control (block) sun light:

Another good thing about our hotel, apart from great view, was that it was close to the location that we were shooting – so Anna could go there and change outfits and do makeup (yes Anna is a full package – she did her hair and makeup).

No E-TTL here, simple SU-4 mode: 2x SB800 thru Lastolite diffuser for upper body and lower body. I setup my 580EX II on camera @ 1/64 – just enough to trigger remote flashes, but not to contribute to the exposure. Bad thing about using SU-4 in street photography: any flash will trigger SU-4 – that’s what happened when some guy was shooting us with his point and shoot with flash (he was hiding too, so it took us a while to figure out what’s going on:)).

Softbox with SB800 camera right, and another SB800 camera left for hairlight. Also SU-4.

In the evening, Anna got us access to the roof top of Riverbank West building. We didn’t have much time, and it was quite windy, so we used really simple setup that worked pretty good: SB800 via SU-4 thru Lastolite diffuser. I had my 580EX II on my camera for triggering SB800 and AF assist, but most of shoots I focused using live view, and I gotta say – I’m getting used to that, and I’m liking that Liveview feature!:)

New York – Tilted

Second post of my trip to Big Apple… This time mostly tilted pictures – the more I use Carl Zeiss lenses with tilt adapter, the more I like them:)

I’ve been to Empire State Building many times before, but that time I didn’t have my tilt equipment, so I decided it would be fun to go once again. I guess the thing with New york is that you cannot get enough of that great city. When I lived in New Jersey for over 2 years, very often I went to “the City”, almost every weekend, specially in the beginning, so you would think that there is nothing to be excited about… naah – you’d be wrong – New York City is in my opinion the best city, and I get goose bumps when I think about going there:)Alright, enough of talking, here are the pictures from Empire State Building:

We stayed in the World Center Hotel, right next to World Trade Center in the financial district. We had great view from our 14(if I remember well) floor room, and on the roof deck there was a restaurant – so one fine day in the morning after the breakfast we grabbed our cameras and took some pictures:

Place where Twin Towers used to be, is now one big construction zone, with workers working 24/7… what a emotional experience looking at it and realizing that few years back, here used to be something totally different

So that’s it, New York… Not sure if that is New York thingy or not – but I had good ratio of selects vs total  – 45 out of 379 photos. Pretty good I think, but that’s more like street photography – so maybe that explains it:)I’ve one or maybe two post coming from my trip to New York, need to show you great model Anna, and maybe some night pictures from Dumbo and more street photography, so stay put!

Sudipto - Hi, first of all photos were great…..i really liked the way those photos were taken….
I’m not an expert but somehow like good photographies…. I felt you are very subject specific….majority of the photos contain some part concentrated upon with the rest left out (blurred)…
plz do let me know your thoughts on this….
plz don’t take my words as comment but just an observation….want to understand how you looked and what u thought before taking those snaps…

Joe McNally Advanced Workshops

Oh boy, what a birthday gift I got this year:)!! Kamila bought me Joe McNally’s advanced workshops in Dobbs Ferry, NY. My friend and photographer – Pete – always wanted to go and see Joe at work, but I was hesitating, since I’ve been to McNally’s workshops last year, and New York is not exactly around the corner. This year, Joe and his crew came up with something new – Advanced Workshops – I knew it would be super cool and I could learn something new. Advanced workshops were more intensive, setup and techniques were more complex than the last year workshops, and after lunch Joe split us into 4-5 person groups and we got to use whatever is available in the studio to shoot gorgeous models inside and around the building.

It was awesome to see master at work…

Joe checking the result on Mac HD display, I’m not an expert, but he looks quite happy:)

Entire group (15 peeps) could see what’s the end result on Joe’s MacBook Pro screen and 24″ Apple LED display:

Crew as always was super helpful and ready to answer every question. Here’s Andrew, ugh, Andrew’s back I mean…

Joe using his Lastolite Ezbox and CLS

Joe explaining and working photography technique that he learned in France: bouncing light from inside those big reflective doors and then white wall – the result – super soft wrapping light:

and here is the result

Before we broke for lunch we covered how to turn small flashes into big ones, how to integrate small and big lights, how to work out the ratio between flashes, and used high speed sync. Also we covered some basics like how to change WB depending on the situation, and that one light setup works for one model/outfit, but not necessary for another one. It was great to watch Joe working, creating problems on purpose just so he can solve them and share the knowledge with us.

After lunch Joe showed us some advanced techniques, which is stroboscope motion photography, double exposure, etc. I didn’t use my camera there, since it was pitch black, and I wanted to focus on watching and understanding Joe, but if you want to check it out, click here. Joe started with two light sources (left and right), and 2 exposures, so he can freeze the subject, but get the motion blur as the subject moves. But that wasn’t quite working as he would like it to, so he ended up with single exposure.

Joe explained what he calls “Triage mode” – how to step out of the fire and finish up the shoot and deliver picture you’re getting paid for. Not always everything is as we would like it to be, and sometimes you’re not creating art, you’re just saving your ass:)

After that we (4-5 person group) had 2 hours with the models, and Joe was checking with us throughout that time, making sure that we’re getting the results we wanted and if not – giving advices how to achieve that.

Because it was pretty bright (and hot) in the studio, I decided to use Flash Zebra 24 feet cord, so I can go high speed via E-TTL. I knew I cannot go crazy with it (like 1/800th), because of power loss, so I stayed just a little bit over my max sync speed (1/200th). I used my 85mm 1.2 and 24mm 1.4 @ 2.8 and below.

Steve – another photographer in our Canon group (all other groups were Nikon) had that strive to use CTO gels and go tungsten on white balance, and I actually liked the result:)A little bit moody, more dramatic, but at the same time pretty cool:

Then we went to another location, and I noticed that if I underexpose the glassy ceiling by 1 – 1&1/2 stop I will get pretty cool result. Of course I had to light our beautiful subject, otherwise she’d be silhouette:)We used 580EX II + Lastolite Ezbox for upper part of the body and 580EX II + reflector for lower body.

CTO + tungsten WB again:

Another location we were able to squeeze in during our 2hr shoot, very moody and dramatic, specially when you bring your shutter speed up to 1/800 of a sec and kill ambient light (last picture). As a main light source – Lastolite Ezbox via Fash Zebra cord, because I wanted to shoot wide open with my 24mm…

Couldn’t decide which one I like better, so I uploaded both: straight out of camera and b&w

After that we went up to the roof for “great finale” – Joe was overpowering the sun with 6x SB900. Lot going on here: mattress for amortization:), Maria Arce jumping with knives and swords, lots of flashes…

Here is Joe and my buddy Pete shooting Maria:)

Yup, that’s it. It was definitely worth it! I’d love to go to Joe’s workshops again, maybe next time to that 5 days one in Santa Fe:D– I hope you’re reading this Kamila:)but seriously, it was great experience to watch Joe doing his magic, and it was worth every penny.

Thanks again to Kamila for the best birthday gift ever and to Pete for spending it with me!

Ala & Artur

Two weeks before we got to shoot engagement session for our friends – Ala and Artur. Very cute couple, we had great time during entire session. Both of them are very happy people, easy going. Artur spent over 1 year in Afghanistan as bomb squad soldier (yikes !) and Ala is one of those girls that you just love to hang out with…

For location we picked city park in Downers Grove, around 2PM, so I had no choice other than to use E-TTL with Flash Zebra cable + Lastolite Ez-Softbox. I controlled flash exposure compensation from the camera and when needed I used Lastolite tri grip diffusor hand hold by Kamila.

For couple of shots I decided to use my Carl Zeiss lens with tilt adapter. It was a little bit different than shooting still objects, since it’s manual focus…

Ooh, did I mention that Ala and Artur met on internet chat? Yeah, for real:)So Kamila came up with an idea that you can see below. I used two lights, one 580ex II + Ez-Softbox, and one 580ex II + Lastolite Tri Grip, both on Pocket Wizards II, because ambient allowed me to synch at 1/200th of a second.

Then we went across the street and I noticed that quality of ambient started to be much better, so I didn’t think too much – grabbed my Flash Zebra cord and shoot E-TTL thru Ez-Softbox:

We wanted to do something unusual, and we decided jump is crazy enough. I knew that I couldn’t shoot close to 1.4, so I cranked my aperture to 5.6, locked my focus and used E-TTL with 580ex II with Ez-Softbox behind me (if you look carefully on shadows – you can see Kamila holding it behind me:))

Grace - This is a great set Piotr! My faves are #1 and #7. As I looked through the photos, my smile just got bigger and bigger. Nice happy couple!

bizior - thanks Anna. Happy couple indeed, it was pleasure working with them :)

Natalia & her baby

You remember Natailia from previous session in my apartment studio, right? Well, I enjoyed working with Natalia – and I think the feeling was mutual – so we decided it’s about time for another session:)Also Natalia wanted to be photographed with her new baby – her new car – Infiniti FX35. Car, like Natalia, is sophisticated, has beautiful inside and changes it’s colors depending on light conditions  (well maybe not exactly, but you get my point:) ) I have to tell ya, the idea comes from Chicago photographer – Matt Bigelow, that he came up with, while shooting model in Cadillac Escalade. I didn’t know what the exact setup was, but that wasn’t a problem – I knew that I was gonna use Lastolite softbox and E-TTL. On top of that I had Kamila as an assistant and Pete Tsai shooting with me, so I wasn’t worried about any technical challenges:)

Warning: Strobist stuff (if you are not photographer – skip it:))

So here we go: extra long E-TTL cable from flash zebra hooked to 580ex II flash on the stand high behind me, 1x 580ex II + Lastolite Trigrip subject right outside the car window, and 1x 580ex II + Lastolite Softbox slightly right of the subject thru the open car doors. Decided to put 580ex II because it was impossible to get all 3 flashes to “see each other” when I had my 580ex II on the hot shoe (car blocked E-TTL pretty well). Here is the diagram for better understanding. Few things about editing: few weeks back I finished online training hosted by Flickr legend and Photoshop guru – Aaron Nace, called Digital Enhancement. Aaron is showing tons of tips and tricks, and for this photoshoot there was one particular that I’ve decided to use. I wanted to make my pictures look a little bit like Michael Kors ad, but not to overdo it. I wanted to do it just after the training was over, but I didn’t shoot anything quite fashion like that, and I knew it’s gonna perfectly match Natalia and her style.

For two pictures below Lastolite Softbox + 580ex II on E-TTL cord above subject slightly left, and for the second shoot reflector to block direct sun (you can notice the change on Natalia’s leg)

Here we decided to take out 86″ PLM with only one flash (you can see it on bumper’s reflection) everything E-TTL (no cord tho)

For last two shots I used my Carl Zeiss + Titl adapter.
